  • /THE ARTIST’S DIARY – BLOOMING JELLLYFISH

A 19th Century biologist and artist, German born EARNST HAEKEL, recorded and created intricate hand drawn and water-coloured images of organisms including jellyfish,  often revealing their geometric structures and patterns.  Their inherent beauty belies their ancient origins over 500 million years ago.

In fact Haekel named a jellyfish after his first wife (Mitrocoma Anne – Anna’s headband).

A cornucopia of jellyfish appeared recently on our local beaches, some translucent, some opaque and some floating gracefully on the tide. Whilst Haeckel used his microscope to draw elaborate renditions which subsequently influenced art movements such as Art Nouveau, the new technology of the mobile phone has enabled contemporary artists to capture their beauty.
